The 1980’s are famous for horrendous clothing trends, however, when it comes to shoes, the last two decades managing upstage any other time. Here is a brief history of the worst shoe trends in modern culture.
1. Uggs. Just because something is trendy does not mean that it is elegant. Remember smooth, legwarmers and shoulder pads? They were all very fashionable at the same time.
The truth is that Uggs ridiculous, and fifteen years from now when your kids discover their beloved Uggs hiding in the attic, you watch and laugh. I do not care how they are comfortable, well. I feel very comfortable under a quilt, but never in a garment in public.
2. Crocs. It is difficult to take seriously when someone is using shoes made of foam. Aside from its unsightly appearance, Crocs also belong on this list due to their proliferation in all spheres of American life. When you see a 60-year-old shopping in Wal-Mart to use the same pair of shoes you have on, it could be time to reconsider the move to a new style of footwear.
3. Sandals. There is a time and place to use sandals. Unfortunately, time is 200BC and the place is the ancient Egypt. Those who use sandals in public shows a blatant disregard for others. After all, who wants to see your bunions while you’re eating dinner at Appleby’s? Get in time, Moses. The footwear has evolved over the last thousand years, so why stick to a style that is pure Stone Age?
4. Heelys. The marketing genius behind these shoes with wheels built, obviously, has a bitter hatred towards those poor bastards who work on the floor for attention. Heelys were patented in 2000, and soil and janitors have been on the brink of suicide buffers since.
5. Timberland boots. My guess is that 90% of people who wear Timberlands have never set foot in a forest. Those who use Timberlands are probably a lot of those people who own Hummers, but refuse to drive on any unpaved roads for fear of getting their Hummer dirty. Only in America could a "gangsta" rapper from the Bronx have the same shoes as a lumberjack in Oregon.
As you can see, modern footwear fashion show a disturbing trend in United States, which is comfortable is more important than looking like an idiot. This is why today you see people wearing pajamas to the mall. Somewhere in a cemetery in Europe, Coco Chanel is surely spinning in his grave.
